The upper town, which constitutes the primitive city, was built on a steep hill in the 12th century by Arnaud du Pont, but a bridge over the Dourdou, which can still be admired, had been built here a century before. The city was fortified, but, because of its position, it had to undergo the invasions of the English, then suffered the wars of Religion. The city then took advantage of the water of the Dourdou to develop its industry, in particular through the manufacture of sheets. However the industrial activity is much older because the Romans already exploited copper mines and, later, the small city will make, in the XVIIth century a speciality of the iron beating
