The name appears in 1238. From 1320, the town belonged jointly to the King of France, the Bishop of Vabres and the Count of Caylus. During the Hundred Years' War, it came under English domination, before becoming an important Protestant stronghold during the Wars of Religion. In the 18th century, the town prospered with the installation of draperies, bonnet and knitwear factories. This activity declined in the 19th century, as the agricultural sector developed. Today, the town boasts a 19th-century neo-Gothic church and the Caylus rock, which offers a panoramic view of the region. Saint-Affrique boasts over 30 dolmens!
