Saint-Geniez is nicknamed "the marmot city" in reference to a legend dating back to the 15th century: two children, living with their father in a house on the banks of the Lot, had tamed a marmot. One stormy evening, the poor animal ran away, frightened, taking the children with it. Finally, the children and the animal had to take shelter in a hut. When they returned to the village, they found that the Lot had overflowed and washed away their house and father. The children saved by the marmot did not leave it any more, and they were called the marmots, name which was given to the inhabitants of Saint-Geniez-d'Olt, ideally placed between causses and Aubrac.
