Raon means confluence and stage, toll. At the confluence of the Meurthe and Plaine rivers, Raon was an important tollbooth town for timber rafting. the town has 12 listed fountains. Some of these cast-iron works are copies of statues on display at the Louvre. The installation of these fountains at the end of the 19th century served two purposes: to bring running water to all parts of the town, and to fight fires more effectively. The arcades of the town hall, which dates from 1733, are particularly noteworthy, and the salon d'honneur, with its unique collection of paintings, provides a better understanding of the city's name.
