Established on the banks of the Meurthe, this town was built in the 7th century. In addition to its interesting monuments such as the Roche de la Pierre d'Appel, the abbey dating from the 7th century, and the Romanesque church of Notre-Dame, Étival-Clairefontaine is renowned for its paper-making tradition. The first paper mill was founded in 1512, under the impetus of Abbot Fagnozel. The industry continued to flourish until 1837, when paper production declined. Taken over in 1858 by the entrepreneur Jean-Baptiste Bichelberger, the paper mills gave birth in 1951 to the famous Clairefontaine notebooks
