At the border of the departments of Haute Saone and the Vosges, Hautmougey dominates the right bank of Côney, to the northeast of Bains-les-Bains. In 1612, at the Fontenoy-le-Château conference, it was decided to take the opinion of the people of certain communes bordering their membership in the County or Lorraine. In 1614, it was decided that Hautmougey will be from Burgundy County. It was in 1856 that the municipality became independent. It is now a little over 150 inhabitants living in this village at an average altitude of 320 m.
