Épinal is a saga told through images, an authentic visual epic. Within the Cité de l'Image, the Imagerie d'Épinal perpetuates the artistic traditions initiated in the late 18th century by Jean-Charles Pellerin, while the Musée de l'Image houses one of Europe's most remarkable collections of illustrations, covering a period from ancient to contemporary times. In medieval times, the city stood proudly on a rocky spur, the origin of the Latin word spina. The castle stands majestically, offering easy access to the garden via the Chinese Tower, which dominates the town. The basilica, classified as a historic monument since 1846, deserves special attention. Its construction began in the 11th century, and it underwent transformations in the 13th century. The Musée du Chapitre, housed in a medieval tower in the heart of the Basilica's historic quarter, reveals the history of Épinal on three levels, including a model of the town in 1626, inspired by Nicolas Bellot's painting.Notre-Dame-au-Cierge church, built in the early 20th century and rebuilt 15 years later, was destroyed by bombing in 1944. Its rebuilding in 1958 by architect Jean Crouzillard was marked by stained glass windows by Gabriel Loire and Léon Leyritz, adding an artistic dimension to the central door in cloisonné enamel on copper.
