Situated near the Biesme, the natural border between the Germanic Empire and the Kingdom of France, Clermont-en-Argonne was a defensive site. Almost destroyed during the First World War, it was elegantly rebuilt. The roundup of 29 July 1944 made its sad fame: after an exchange of fire, German troops arrested 112 Clermontois, 100 of whom were deported. The city is surrounded by beautiful forests, sandy and clay environment. This richness was exploited both in architecture (picturesque cob and half-timbered houses) and in the manufacture of glass and Argonne earthenware.
