On the banks of the Bionne River, Hans is a former barony which had two castles during the reign of Louis XIII. Hans Castle was a royal resort and also served as the residence of the governor of Sainte-Ménehould. During the Battle of Valmy, the Duke of Brunswick, who commanded the Prussian troops, established his headquarters there. A notorious feature of the church is the 13th-century Hans Church, which houses a rare collection of stained glass windows commemorating glorious military events, installed after the War of 1870, which had devastated eastern France in particular. It was installed after the war of 1870, which had devastated eastern France in particular. It is due to the generosity of the Count of Dampierre, Maurice-Henry du Val, a native cavalry general of Hans who returned to the country in 1880. Formerly Notre-Dame des Marais, Hans' church took the title of Notre-Dame-du-Soldat after the Pope's approval in 1889
