Varennes left its mark on French history. On the night of June 21-22, 1791, Louis XVI and his family, having fled and been recognized in Sainte-Ménehould, were arrested and detained in what is now the Tour de l'Horloge. Two plaques commemorate this episode: one affixed to the tower, the other to the site of the Sauce prosecutor's house where the King spent the night before returning to Paris. The Musée de l'Argonne retraces major events in local history, from the flight to Varennes to the Great War. Nearby, the Pennsylvania Monument pays tribute to the American 28th Infantry Division, which liberated the town from occupation on September 26, 1918.
