Five centuries BC, the Gauls were already mining gold. From 1982 to 2002, the Bourneix factory, now closed, extracted up to two tons of gold a year! In the early 12th century, Saint Geoffroy and his monks built the church, and during the Hundred Years' War, the English fortified the site. Le Chalard is well worth a visit: the old streets lined with flower-filled houses, the church, medieval cemetery and priory, the banks of the Isle, a paradise for walkers and fishermen. Take a detour 1 kilometer away to see the tower, a vestige of a castle, the medieval bridge and the small Gallo-Roman bridge.
