The town of Saint-Yrieix grew up on the ancient Gallo-Roman domain of Attanum, where the priest Arédius (Yrieix) founded a monastic community in 564. When he died, he was considered a saint. Later, the growing number of pilgrims to his tomb and his favorable status with the bishop of Limoges led to the town's development and influence in the region. In the 18th century, the town was transformed by antimony and, above all, kaolin mining. A stroll through its picturesque streets will reveal brown and flat tile roofs crowding around the collegiate church and the Plô tower.
