In Gallo-Roman times, the site, which is probably a small island in the Gironde, was known for its oyster farming. A Roman named Valerius (the first accepted origin of the commune's name) built a villa here. Another hypothesis is that the origin of the name comes from the Celtic or Bas-Breton balira, meaning "overhang of a building" In 1741, the parish priest uncovered the foundations of an enclosing wall, which was almost certainly an ancient fortification used to defend against invaders arriving by boat from the estuary. Between Pauillac and Le Verdon, the small port of La Goulée offers a beautiful panorama of the estuary.
