This seaside resort has a very special relationship with the ocean. In the early 19th century, houses were not built facing the beach, but clustered around the church. At the time, there were two communes: Saint-Georges, home to the sailors who fished in the Gironde estuary, and Didonne, populated by farmers. The sea-bathing craze modernized the town, making it a favorite vacation spot for artists and writers such as Jules Michelet.
