2 km south of Collioure, Port-Vendres, Portus Veneris for the Romans is the most important fishing port in the Pyrénées-Orientales. Formerly neglected by tourists in favour of its elegant neighbour, this small town of about 5,000 inhabitants nevertheless offers a very Mediterranean atmosphere, with its fish restaurants and small fishing boats swinging in this natural cove. The town is also an important trading centre, specialising in fruit and vegetables. Cruise liners and other luxury private yachts also dock here all year round as it is the only deep-water port in the department
