On the eastern slopes of the Margeride, at an altitude of 1,300 meters, Saint-Sauveur has the distinction of being the least populated commune in the canton of Châteauneuf-de-Randon. In 1990, it had just 80 inhabitants, rising to 64 in 2009... In 1872, the church tower collapsed on the presbytery, killing the priest. The steeple has since been raised, and the church retains a handsome baptismal font bearing the Maltese cross, a symbol of the Knights of St. Jerusalem who owned the parish. The surrounding area is dotted with numerous granite and wrought-iron crosses: boundary crosses, pilgrimage crosses and commemorative crosses.
