Saint-Yzans marks the transition from the Haut-Médoc to the Médoc. A wild land of marshes and vineyards, this is "la pampa", as it's known here. Gallo-Roman remains from the 1st and 2nd centuries at the Bois-Carré villa prove that the village has existed for a long time (a coin collection is on display at the town hall), but it's above all Château Loudenne that you'll want to head for. It overlooks the estuary, and a public walkway gives everyone access to the river. Don't hesitate to pedal to the little port of La Maréchale via the footpath, lost in the greenery and reeds, where you may catch a glimpse of a fishing boat on its way out.
