Covering an area of 5,445 hectares, including 2,400 ha in the central zone of the Parc National des Cévennes, the commune of Altier is made up of 19 hamlets. Its population of 223 triples in the summer. The main town, dominated by the Saint-Privat church, is located on the road that today links Villefort to Mende. From the terrace on which the church stands, you can see the imposing ruins of the d'Altier family's 12th-century fortified castle. Further down the road, in the direction of Mende, is the Château de Champ, still built by the d'Altier family in the 13th century, but not open to the public.
