In the north of the département, on the shores of Lake Garabit, the town's main source of income is water, which used to supply the electrometallurgy plant. It also boasts the world's largest orthopedic shoe, built by a specialist factory! The Albaret-le-Contal hydroelectric plant was built between 1916 and 1919 to power the Saint-Chély electrometallurgy plant. This huge project created a 141 m-high dam on the Bès at Vergne, built entirely of local stone. A 4.5 km road had to be built to transport the 19-ton rotor from the station to the site. The plant is still in operation today.
