The ruins of the ancient fortified castle of the barony of Apcher, located in Arzenc-d'Apcher, are the oldest testimony to the past in the canton. It once protected the town from its neighbors to the west, a fact easily explained by its admirable location overlooking the Bès gorges. The building belonged to the barons of Apcher, one of the eight baronies of Gévaudan. Built at the end of the 12th century, it comprised a tall, isolated tower, a fortification and several cylindrical towers built two centuries later. From a fortress, the château became a prestigious residence, before being abandoned in the 17th century.
