This charming village is located on the ancient Rutene route, which linked the Bas-Languedoc to the Rouergue. The church was built shortly after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, which made Sumène a predominantly Catholic town. The troubles of the Revolution accentuated the cleavage between the Protestants, republicans, and the Catholics, royalists. In the 19th century, the economic activity took off thanks to the wool industry, the cooperage and the silk industry. Spinning mills and hosiery factories were created while magnaneries multiplied in the whole hinterland. Several textile companies are still in operation.
