Near Uzès, Arpaillargues-et-Aureillac is a fortified village with houses built of Pont du Gard stone, narrow streets and vaulted passageways testifying to its medieval past. Its château (an elegant 18th-century residence that once belonged to the d'Agoult family) overlooks farmland planted with vines (the famous Domaine de Chabrier). At the beginning of the last century, the Romanesque church was converted into a home for the rainy-day poet Alfred Méric. Also worth seeing: the fortified church of St Pierre, and the 1900 museum, with its 3,700 objects. The Conques trail, with its stone walls and capitelles, is also well worth a visit.
