In the south of the department, this Minervois village owes its name to the Latin Aquaviva, from aqua (water) and viva (living), thus describing a gushing spring. Aigues-Vives charms with its cobbled streets and remarkable winegrowers' houses, witness to a thousand years of history marked by the Gaul revolt. The 12th-century Romanesque church dominates the central square, offering a glimpse into the village's glorious past. Also of note is the bronze statue of Émile Jamais, and the exhibition devoted to former president Gaston Doumergue in his birthplace. The surrounding countryside, with its vineyards and wooded hills, is ideal for hiking.
