Crossed by the Canal du Rhône à Sète, between the Costières plateau and the Camargue regional nature park, Saint-Gilles is the ideal starting point for discovering the Camargue Gardoise, a major French site. The town is also famous for its monumental abbey church, a perfect masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998. A major pilgrimage site in medieval Christianity, Saint-Gilles was also an important port city in the Mediterranean basin. Today, the town's rich heritage is complemented by gastronomic delights such as Camargue rice and PDO bull meat.
