Couiza is an ancient city that attracted the Romans at an early date. During the Wars of Religion, it witnessed the battles of the Crusaders against the Cathars, and fell into the hands of Pierre de Voisins. Numerous invaders came and went between the 4th and 8th centuries, plundering and ravaging the area. The extinction of the Voisins family coincided with the construction of the Château de Couiza in 1513, marking the alliance with the de Joyeuse family. Guillaume de Joyeuse, leader of the Catholic League, settled here in 1562. From the end of the 19th century until the 1930s, Couiza was a millinery center.
