At the gateway to the upper Aude valley, on the banks of the river of the same name, Limoux has its origins in a Roman settlement. The first known mention of the town dates back to the middle of the 9th century, and its urban development took hold from the 11th century onwards, in the vicinity of the Saint-Martin church. Limoux was an important center of Catharism, and resisted both the King of France and the Church. Around 1240, the district on the right bank of the Aude, now known as the "Petite Ville", appeared. This area was home to crafts-related activities. The town is famous for its Blanquette sparkling wine and for its carnival.
