Couiza is an ancient city that attracted the Romans very early. During the Wars of Religion, it was a privileged witness of the Crusader battles against the Cathars, it then fell into the hands of Pierre de Voisins. Numerous invaders marched in between the 4th and 8th centuries, plundering and ravaging the surrounding area. The extinction of the Neighbours' family coincided with the construction of the castle of Couiza in 1513, which marked the alliance with the Joyeuse family. William de Joyeuse, head of the Catholic League, settled there in 1562. At the end of the 19th century and until the 1930s Couiza was centred on the activity of hat making.
