A town in the Haute Beauce region at the crossroads of two Roman roads, Ablis was the site of significant economic activity during Antiquity. Excavations in the Ablis-Nord industrial zone revealed the existence of an ironworking industry, as well as fragments of pottery and coins. Legend has it that William the Conqueror stayed here in the 11th century, and that the town was home to a leper colony in the 13th century. Fortified on two occasions, parts of the town wall can still be seen. In 1658, it became a county thanks to the ennoblement of Pierre I Poncet de la Rivière, and was a county town between 1795 and 1799.
