Prunay, from the Latin prunus (planted with plum trees), was formerly known as Prunay-sous-Ablis before merging with Craches to become Prunay-en-Yvelines in 1979. Inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by a number of carved flints found in the area, the village comprises six hamlets: l'Abbé, Craches, Marchais-Parfond, Gourville, la Chapelle and Villiers Landoue. The bas Prunay tower once marked the boundary between Gourville, a dependency of the Chartres monks, and Prunay, the territory of the Monfort lords. The ru de Perray runs through the area, before becoming the Rémarde in the Centre-Val de Loire region.
