This commune, whose past goes back to prehistory, was also the scene of a battle between Joan of Arc and Franquet d'Arras in May 1430, which is why its second church, built in 1934, was dedicated to this emblematic character of French history. Like many towns in the Ile-de-France, Vaires developed in the 19th century. The canal from Vaires to Neuilly-sur-Marne via Chelles was dug there and the first railroad station on the Paris-Strasbourg line was opened in 1898.
