The town's origins date back to ancient times. However, tangible evidence of its history comes relatively late. In the 12th century, there were three parishes, i.e. three villages and three churches: Pontault, a church dedicated to Saint-Denis; Berchères, a chapel dedicated to Saint Pierre-ès-Liens; and Combault, a church dedicated to Saint-Côme and Saint-Damien. Pontault and Combault did not merge until 1839. The town boasts a number of monuments, including the 13th-century church of Saint-Denis. It is home to the Centre photographique d'Île-de-France, dedicated to contemporary art.
