Occupied since prehistoric times, then during Antiquity, it wasn't until the 12th century that Gastins appeared in the annals, as a possession of the abbey of Notre-Dame de Jouy, which had two windmills built there in 1228. Only one has survived: the "moulin Chouaix" or "Choix", the only remaining example of the 250 or so windmills that once covered the region. Although this mill is not open to the public, it is well worth a visit. Classified as a historic monument in 1970, it was restored and put back into service. Since then, it has remained in operation. Gastins is also home to a 12th-century church, a number of farms and a washhouse, which is celebrated every year during the Ronde des Lavoirs.
