Compans traces its origins back to the Neolithic era, when it was occupied by Gauls and Gallo-Romans who exploited its resources. In the Middle Ages, its lands were divided between the Church and local lords, before coming under the control of powerful figures such as Louis Boucherat, chancellor under Louis XIV. Its church, rebuilt in 1867, is the successor to a building already mentioned in the 13th century. An agricultural village, Compans once boasted water-powered mills, including the 12th-century Ouacre mill and the Condé mill.
