The village of Cressia was built by the quarrymen who extracted the stone in its secluded setting. As a result, the stonework of the houses is particularly meticulous. If you look up at the ridge overlooking the valley, you'll see a squat castle with an enormous keep. Its foundations date back to the 14th century. It escaped the destruction wrought by the annexation of Franche-Comté by France, a rare occurrence, but this did not prevent it from undergoing a number of alterations. The Comte de Bussy-Rabutin stayed here and wrote letters to his famous cousin, the Marquise de Sévigné. Today, it houses a private school for girls.
