Built between the arms of the Seille, Bletterans is the "capital" of the Bresse jurassienne. With less than 2,000 inhabitants, its location nevertheless makes it an active and lively town during the Tuesday morning market and its annual mid-September fair. On the border between Franche-Comté and Burgundy, Bletterans reflects the tumultuous history between the two provinces. Under Burgundian and Spanish domination, in 1637 it was ruined by the assault of the Duke of Longeville's army. During the Second World War, the Resistance was active there, even hosting a clandestine landing centre. It was from here that the Aubrac couple were evacuated to London in 1944.
