One hour from Besançon, between Pontarlier and Morteau, you can go to the top of the crêt Monniot to take in the magical landscape of the Saugeais, then take the road to La Chaux and finally arrive at Montbenoît. This village, founded by the hermit Benoit around 1050, developed around an impressive abbey whose construction began in the 9th century. It remains the only medieval religious complex preserved in the Doubs department. The river of the same name runs alongside the town with the park of the Morand-Val castle. Since 1947, Montbenoît has also been the capital of the Free Republic of Saugeais, whose most illustrious president was Madame Pourchet.
