An hour's drive from Besançon, between Pontarlier and Morteau, you can climb to the top of Crêt Monniot to take in the magical Saugeais landscape, then take the road to La Chaux and finally reach Montbenoît. Founded by the hermit Benoit around 1050, this village grew up around an impressive abbey, first built in the 9th century. It remains the only preserved medieval religious complex in the Doubs département. The river of the same name runs alongside the town, along with the parkland of the Château de Morand-Val. Montbenoît has also been the capital of the "Saugeais Free Republic" since 1947.
