A Gothic-Romanesque abbey with distinctive architecture and beautifully carved wooden stalls.
The abbey is the perfect example of a transitional building between Romanesque and Gothic art. You can see these styles between the nave and the aisles. Montbenoit is one of the few examples where the Gothic style (Cistercian influence) made its way in, as Franche-Comté preferred to keep its regional models. If the abbey had such an influence in the Middle Ages, it was mainly due to the salt route which passed through Montbenoit and which interested the abbots. Apart from the architectural aspect, you will love the magnificently sculpted wooden stalls and the cloister, a small haven of peace.

If you are not sensitive to cold at this early spring, discover Abbaye de Montbenoit, near the Swiss border in Haut Doubs. Beware, do not forget to take your passport. You will have to enter the Republic of Saugeais, where customs make good guard. The abbey is an example of architecture in the crossing of the romanesque and Gothic. The porch of the abbey church was renovated. However, the nave, austere, romanesque in his cradle, will take you to the heart of a flamboyant Gothic. The polygonal apse is furnished with magnificent stalls. Do not forget to the cloister through a door on the right of the nave. The chapitaux ones of columns will allow you to discover a whole fantastic wildlife, including Vouivre, dragon well-known female in the country.
