Rilly is one of the oldest villages on the Montagne de Reims. In the 9th century, Risleius is said to have been the wine-producing property of the German Hrisilo, before falling under the control of the Abbey of Saint-Rémi until the Revolution of 1789, when Rilly became Rilly-la-Montagne. Renowned for its vineyards, the village produced still wines at the time. At the beginning of the 19th century, it boasted 192 hectares of vines and 40 presses. The winegrowers of Rilly began making blanc de noirs. Today, Rilly is classified as a "premier cru" and boasts over 350 hectares of the three Champagne grape varieties, mainly pinot noir and pinot meunier.
