The village of Sermiers owes its name to the Sarmatians, an ancient nomadic people of Scythian horsemen, who were settled on these lands by the Romans to exploit the wooded areas. Adjacent to the seigneury of Fleury-la-Rivière, Sermiers is the main hamlet of the commune which includes five of them with Nogent, Petit-Fleury, Coutaumont and Montaneuf, directed since the medieval period by the bishopric of Reims. Since 1993, the vineyard of Sermiers is classified as a first growth, it counts nearly 165 hectares on 1 569 plots of the three traditional Champagne grape varieties, mainly pinot meunier and pinot noir which is in full expansion.
