The small village of Écueil has about 138 hectares and twice as many inhabitants. As confirmed by excavations carried out in 1909, the village was originally crossed by the Gallic road the Barbarie, connecting the Rèmes to the Bellovaques, also called the Chaussée Brunehaut. The village was then built around the church, but was burned down following a plague epidemic before being rebuilt in its current place, below. The church dedicated to Saint Crépin and Saint Crépinien, built between the 13th and 15th centuries, dominates the Champagne plain. At its foot, one can admire a stele representing the planet Earth which commemorates the great jubilee of the year 2000.
