Located on the right bank of the Vesle, Fismes is an ancient Gallic city, known in Gallo-Roman times as Ad Fines Suessionium or Ad Fines Remorum, the limit of the territory of the Gallic tribes of Suessions and Rèmes. Dedicated to Saint Macre, the church of Fismes dating from the 12th century and reworked in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, is worth a visit. The city was hit hard by the Great War and was razed by the Germans in 1918. The bridge between Fismes and Fismette on its outskirts was rebuilt by the State of Pennsylvania in 1928 and is now a memorial to the 28th Pennsylvania Infantry Division
