The unusual feature of Fleury-la-Rivière is that it does not have a river on its territory. If the town bears this name, it is indeed in connection with its wine-growing past: here it is not the water, but the wine that flows freely. Originally, the winegrowers produced red wine that was transported in barrels down to the Marne River before being shipped to Paris by river. It was not until the second half of the twentieth century that the winegrowers of Fleurys began to produce champagne. The bottles produced thanks to their two hundred and some hectares of vineyards are exported all over the world, without passing by the river.
