Les Riceys is organized around three villages: Ricey-Haut, Ricey-Haute-Rive and Ricey-Bas. Yet it's the only commune in France to boast three appellations d'origine contrôlée! This wine-growing town, where Pinot Noir is king, produces Champagne, Coteaux-Champenois and the famous Les Riceys rosé, with many opportunities for cellar visits. This triad of villages was historically torn between the county of Champagne and the duchy of Burgundy. The village was totally ravaged during the Hundred Years' War after bloody battles, but Burgundy's incorporation into France in 1477 put an end to the conflicts that raged in this territory. De facto, Burgundy wines and Champagne wines also fought over ownership of the appellation. These are pleasant little towns, with the old-fashioned allure of small villages, many with remarkable signs and works of ironwork. White facades illuminate the narrow streets. Each village boasts a chapel and a listed church. With 866 hectares under appellation, Les Riceys is the largest wine-growing commune in Champagne! The market takes place every Thursday morning. Les Riceys will also appeal to lovers of historical heritage, with its three churches: the church of Saint Pierre-es-Liens in Ricey-Bas, the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, and the church of Saint-Vincent. You can also visit the Château de Taisne.
