Bordered by the Burgundy canal, Montbard has preserved its historic center with its interlocking roofs, narrow streets and bridges that open onto the Auxois countryside. The town has a few surprises in store for those who know how to stroll its streets and discover its magnificent park nestled in its heart, its museums and its buildings where the shadow of the naturalist Buffon hangs in the air. We can also include its forges and the nearby Fontenay Abbey. The origin of Montbard's name varies between two definitions, each of which emphasizes the verticality of the place: the mount of the bards, the Gallic druids, or Montis Barri, the mountain that marks the edge of the Brenne valley.
