In 1882, the painter Auguste Renoir settled in this small village with its vine-planted hillsides. He bought the house, where he stayed every year from May to October. Today, the house belongs to his descendants, and visits are not permitted. The Château d'Essoyes now houses the tax office and school. See the remains of the walled town with its five gates, the 19th-century market hall and the dovecote of the "maladrerie", which stood near the Porte de Mussy as far back as the 11th century. A former seigneury of the Abbey of Molesmes, Essoyes long enjoyed the armed protection of the Counts of Champagne.
