A typical Sologne village with low brick houses, impressive for its authenticity, Souvigny-en-Sologne takes its name from "under the vines", being at the time a group of vineyards on which table wine was grown. As unlikely as it may seem, Eugène Labiche was mayor of the town from 1868 to 1878. The writer-humorist minimized his victory in the elections, saying that he had won them because he was the only one in the town to own and use a handkerchief! Despite his vaudevillian bonhomie, Labiche was not to be trifled with when the Prussians invaded the town in 1870.
