Its feudal castle built on a promontory, called "motte", the city took the suffix of Beuvron meaning "river of beavers". It owes its earlier prosperity to its geographical location, not far from the road to Orleans, of which its salt storehouse was part. Later on, its forests, which were favourable to game, made it a major hunting centre, to the point that it was said to be the capital of this practice. Napoleon III left his mark on the town by buying the castle and the estate of Saint-Maurice, then by building the town hall marked with the imperial N, the church and the canal which allowed marl to be brought in to purify the Sologne lands.
