ROCCA DI VIGNOLA

Castles to visit

The impressive Rocca di Vignola stands on the headland of the Panaro River. Founded by the abbots of Nonantola in the 9th century, it then passed from hand to hand, starting with the bishops of Modena. It was in the 13th century that it became an important stronghold when many disputes existed between the families of Bologna and Modena. The Estensi of Ferrara put an end to these quarrels in the 15th century, when it underwent numerous alterations to be transformed into a stately residence. In the 16th century it became the property of the Boncompagni family who lived there until the middle of the 20th century. The main political and social bodies of the town were developed here: town hall, library... It is now managed by the Vignola Foundation, which is in charge of the delicate work of restoring the magnificent frescoes that decorate most of the walls of the fortress. The latter, a still little-known masterpiece, represents a spectacle worthy of the greatest medieval stages. Unique in their genre, they combine art and military architecture. From the inner courtyard, which can be reached by a drawbridge, you can visit the underground passages, the rooms decorated with paintings, and walk along the parapet walk that connects the massive corner towers.

Opposite the Rocca, Palazzo Boncompagni is an elegant Renaissance palace, built on a project by the architect Jacopo Barozzi, a native of Vignola. Its particularity is its totally suspended spiral staircase.

Religious buildings

Founded in the 6th century, the Benedictine Abbey of Pomposa is one of the most beautiful in northern Italy. It had an exceptional influence from the 10th to the 12th century thanks to its library and its abbot Guido di Pomposa, who encouraged the invention of modern musical transcription. The pre-Romanesque church is preceded by a portico with three arches, decorated with multicoloured bricks, marble and majolica. It preserves a mosaic floor and a magnificent set of frescoes from the 14th century. Next to the church stands the 48 m high Romanesque bell tower, built in 1063.

Emblem of the city, this bridge was built in 1638 by the architect Luca Danese of Ravenna. It consists of five wide arched staircases. Under the arcades, five canals (today there are only three), the access roads to Comacchio and the exits to the sea used to converge. In front of the bridge, the old fish shop occupies a characteristic building also dating from the 17th century and restored several times. Further on is the Ponte degli Sbirri ("Bridge of the Cops"), so named because of its proximity to old prisons.

Who, as a child, has never collected Panini stickers, to stick in an album on the theme of the football world cup or his favourite cartoon? Originally from Modena, the Panini brothers founded a publishing house specializing in figurines (self-adhesive images) in 1961. In the 1990s, the company donated 500,000 pieces (stickers, cigarette boxes, etc.) to the city of Modena, which made up the museum's collection. Part of it is on permanent display in showcases that evoke the pages of a scrapbook to be leafed through.

GHETTO

Street square and neighborhood to visit

The origins of the Jewish community in Ferrara date back to the 15th century, when the d'Este family welcomed Jews from Rome, Spain and Germany. In 1627 the Pontifical Government established the ghetto which was located between Via Mazzini, Via Vignatagliata and Via Vittoria. Five gates blocked access from sunset to sunrise; they were knocked down by the new kingdom of Italy in 1859. Today, the ghetto is a quiet neighbourhood, with pebble-paved streets lined with small houses, some of which have Spanish-style balconies.

MUSA-MUSEO DEL SALE

Museums

The Salt Museum retraces a very important part of the history of the city. Inaugurated in 2004, it occupies the rooms of the Magazzino Torre, an ancient salt depot built in 1691 and beautifully restored. The building up of the collection exhibited at the museum began in the 1980s when the "salinaro" (salt collector) Agostino Finchi, with the help of a group of enthusiasts, began to collect objects related to the history of the saltworks. Managed by old "salinari", this incredible museum tells visitors the story of salt collection in Cervia, through images, ancient objects, working tools and various documents. The tools on display are still in use today in the Camillone Saltworks, the open-air section of the museum that is still in operation. In the summer, the museum organizes old-fashioned salt harvesting activities open to the public. Finally, a section displays ancient mosaics from the 6th century church of San Martino and the remains of a ship dating back to the 4th-6th centuries.

Overlooking the Cervia Canal, the Magazzino Torre is a splendid example of industrial architecture. Just across the street is the Darsena depot, built in 1712 and today used for the organization of cultural events. Next to the Darsena depot is the Piazzale dei Salinari, a square in the shape of a quadrilateral in the centre of which you can see the fountain "Il tappeto sospeso", inaugurated in 1997 on the occasion of the tercentenary of the foundation of the new town of Cervia

ROCCA

Military monuments

La Rocca rises on one of the three hills overlooking Brisighella. Erected in the 14th century by the Manfredi family of Faenza, it consists of two cylindrical towers and a fortified enclosure. It is a fine example of military architecture between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. From the Rocca you can take a path that leads to another rocky spur, dominated by the Torre dell'Orologio. The tower was part of 13th century fortifications. Rebuilt in 1850 with the clock, it is an excellent vantage point for observing the town and the surrounding hills.

SALINA DI CERVIA

Parks and gardens

The 827 ha of saltworks can be discovered on foot, by bike or by boat. The park includes the industrial salt production plant and the old Camillone saltworks where salt is still harvested in the traditional way. It is the only saltworks to have survived the reorganisation of salt production in 1959, when small family-run saltworks were replaced by large collection basins and salt harvesting became mechanised. The salt marshes are home to many species of birds, including flamingos.

ROCCA

Military monuments

Erected around the year 1000 on the top of the Bertinoro hill, La Rocca welcomed Emperor Frederick Barbarossa in 1177, who stayed there for several months with his retinue. In the 16th century, when Bertinoro became the seat of a bishopric (and remained so until 1970 when the diocese was united with that of Forli), the Rocca was converted into a residence for bishops. Today it is a university centre attached to the University of Bologna. Its undergroundgalleries house the Museo Interreligioso, dedicated to the three monotheistic religions.

OFFICE DU TOURISME

The Torre dell'Orologio is a historic monument in Bertinoro's Piazza della Libertà. This ancient medieval tower was once much taller and also served as a lighthouse for sailors. In 1599, its height was halved and a Baroque-style bell tower was added. In 1789, a wrought-iron balcony and a niche for the terracotta statue of the Madonna del Lago, patroness of Bertinoro, were built. In 1816, a disciplinary cell was built under the tower, which over time became a café and then the fire department headquarters. In 1934, the tower was restored along with the façade of the town hall, and the 17th-century clock was replaced by the one seen today, which was also moved to the side of the tower. The bells that still mark time bear the date of amalgamation in 1516, as well as the town's coat of arms and the image of the Madonna del Lago.
