The house was then burnt down during a barbarian invasion, with the result that its mosaics, frescoes and the material it contained have come down to us. Exceptional remains of the surgery remain, such as the hospital bed, the office table and above all an incredible collection of 150 surgical instruments, kept in the Museo della Città.

The basilica is flanked by a curious octagonal campanile, whose design is said to have been revised by Giulio Romano, a brilliant pupil of Raphael. Inside, the choir and the apse are decorated with a cycle of frescoes by Procaccini (late 16th century): his Last Judgement is said to be inspired by that of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel. Aware of the patrimonial value of this product, Modena founded its municipal vinegar factory in 2003, under the attic of Palazzo Comunale, where several batteries of barrels rest.
